From glasses-free 3D screens to Augmented Reality glasses, Morphotonics wants to transform the human visual experience with its large-area nanoimprint technology. With multiple customers around the globe already using their equipment, Morphotonics recently joined MNP’s Virtual Accelerator where Rob van der Werf from ASML and Marloes Van De Wal from Vanderlande will be supporting them in scaling up their activities. “Our dream is to have a Morphotonics nanoimprinted product in every pocket. To get there, we come across quite some challenges. It’s great that we’re able to ask questions to those with valuable experience in this field, from strategic or practical questions to technical ones,” Jan Matthijs ter Meulen, Morphotonics’ CEO, explains.

“Morphotonics’ technology is somewhat similar to ASML’s lithography systems, so hopefully we can guide them on their challenging journey and give them support like ASML got from other larger companies when they were a small firm. We’re quite literally neighbors here in Veldhoven and support from your environment helping you to prevent making similar mistakes someone else already made could be very valuable.” Rob van der Werf explains. “It would be a waste to try and reinvent the wheel if there is so much knowledge and expertise nearby,” Irma Van Der Kaaij, Morphotonics’ CFO, adds.
Morphotonics’ technology is based on lithography which means that the machine can precisely add complex structures, like lenses or prisms, onto substrates like glass or foils with custom features ranging from 500 micrometers down to even 50 nanometers. The uniqueness and the advantage of this technology lie in its applicability to produce any optics, for any display and at any size.
One thing is clear, Morphotonics has the ability to enhance our daily lives. As Jan Matthijs explained: “Our innovation is not just applicable for displays; we want to broaden our technology. Large-area nanoimprinting can play an important role in a wide array of applications, from making sustainable smart windows to streamlining the production of certain semiconductor products.
What are your thoughts on this innovation? How long before we all use a Morphotonics nanoimprinted product?
